Foreign
visitors are well advised to exercise restraint on what they eat and from
where. |
 |
As a
rule, tap water or any water not bottled and sealed should be avoided. It is
advisable to buy bottled water from standard shops and always carry a bottle
with you for use as and when you like. Do check the date of expiry printed on
the bottle and also ensure that the seal is in place or has not been tampered
with. There are spurious Water Bottles available around Bus Stands Railway
stations, so one has to be careful as to from where such water is bought. |
 |
Take
only standard international brands of beverages and do not try local brands or
syrups etc. made to order, unless you are the adventurous kind. |
 |
Do
not have any eatables or food items from non-standard outlets or exposed to the
elements in the open. Avoid raw salads or cut fruit. |
 |
Try
and confine yourself to larger eating joints or those listed in the government
tourism literature and there are quite a few of them especially in metropolitan
towns of Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkatta and Chennai as also in other towns of tourists
interest. Food prices are generally very reasonable and you can select an
eating place according to your budget. |

Tipping
the hotel and restaurant staff is quite in order though not compulsory. In some
places service charge is part of the bill oterwise 5 - 10% tipping is common
and expected. |
