Situations :: Tips for Parents/Guardians

Keep your children in your sight or hold them closely at all times when you take them out with you, specially in crowded public places.

Never leave them unattended. Avoid leaving them in the custody of strangers even for a short time. If you have perforce to leave them, it must be in the custody of a person who has children with him/her.

Never leave the child alone/unattended even when you can keep an eye on the child from a distance. Beware: There may be child lifters waiting for such moments in shopping centers, parks, restaurants etc.

If prams are not allowed in certain places, either chose to go some other place or pick up the child and leave the pram outside. If you have to lose let it be the pram rather than the baby.

Do not put costly items like a watch or jewelry on young children when taking them out of the house or sending them out or even in the house if there are servants or outsiders around.

Young children who can not express themselves well should have the name, address and phone no. of the parents placed in the shirt pocket for helping their restoration if they get lost.

If you have to leave a child alone at home with or without an attendant, let it not be known to one and all but only to one or two close and reliable friends/relatives. Undesirable persons overhearing your conversation with people can take advantage.

If you are dealing with a child, who is lost or otherwise in distress, do help him/her. But remember that the child would be wary of speaking to strangers and may not take your genuine help. You will have to anticipate his home training and deal with him in a manner that you are able to help him. Try to localize the problem and get the police or other persons with children involved to gain confidence of the child.

Children should be told not to speak with stranger or accept gifts, chocolates or toys from them till they have your approval.

When leaving child alone or in custody of someone who is not comfortable with phone or may not remember the number, you can programme your phone for one touch dialing (if facility available) or use an Autodialer(s45) or use a Single-button dialer(What's this ?,s139). Even some telephone exchanges offer such a facility.

All the medicines, firearms and any dangerous items must be locked in cupboards so that child may not accidentally injure himself.
