CCTV is one of the most effective devices for the protection and
monitoring by permitting round-the-clock surveillance. The system serves as an excellent
monitoring aid for remote and isolated areas. It can alert the family members / security
personnel of unwanted intrusions and more importantly, can facilitate simultaneous visual
assessment of an event as it happens. CCTV is a reliable, cost-effective deterrent to
crime and a means for the apprehension and prosecution of offenders. Its potential as a
strong psychological deterrent to crime is universally recognized.
To get the best out of the CCTV it is important to carefully choose and match the actual
security requirements at site and environmental conditions. One of the important decisions
while installing such a system is to decide 'where and how will the system be monitored'.
Quite often, 'how the system will be monitored' will dictate where it is to be monitored.
This is really crucial since the setting up of a CCTV will not be of any use if no one is
there to monitor the scenes as given by the cameras. Depending upon the requirement, these
may be monitoring required around the clock or only when these is an emergency. e.g. in Video Door Phone (10) the monitors are activated only when there is
visitor.
CCTV's can be
linked to Sensors (12) to activate them when the sensors detect any
change in environment. By employing CCTV, the number of guards can be reduced as the need
to patrol is reduced. This pays back the cost of CCTV in a short duration. CCTV equipment
is most effective when integrated with other security hardware e.g.: Access
Control (1), Intrusion Detection System (11), Fire Alarms etc.
While selecting a CCTV system, following should be kept in mind :
 |
The camera should be sensitive enough to take
pictures in the worst illumination at the site to be monitored. |
 |
The focal length of the camera lens selected should
cover the entire area to be monitored. Smaller focal length will cover wider area whereas
the zoom lenses (higher focal length) are ideal to monitor far off scenes. |
 |
Camera location should be high enough to prevent
tampering |
 |
Camera should be so fixed as to give unobstructed
view |
 |
Outdoor locations require proper weather-proof
housing / enclosure |
 |
Arrangement of the system of monitoring should allow
continuous / regular manning of all the cameras |
 |
Camera should be so mounted that no one can reach it
without coming in the view. If this is not possible then two cameras (mounted across) may
be used to protect each other. |
A CCTV system consists of cameras, monitors, lenses, housings, brackets, transmission
systems and recorders.
